Narrative

Mary Estella SHUFELT, the daughter of John B. Shufelt and Sarah Hiscox, was born December 11, 1894, and baptized at Christs Lutheran Church of Ghent, July 6, 1895. The baptismal record lists her parents as "John Shufelt and Sarah Amelia Shufelt." On December 1, 1926, Mary Estella married Lafayette Winn of Ghent, New York, the son of Albert Winn and Rebecca Van Netta Philips. In Our Folks, H. B. Shufelt provides the following quote from a Hudson newspaper which shows that this was the second marriage of Lafayette Winn.
GHENT CHURCH IS GIVEN ORGAN Lutheran Congregation Dedicates Gift of Lafayette Winn . . . dedication of a new pipe organ in Chist's Lutheran church of Ghent last Sunday, Jan. 26, 1936, was one of the outstanding events in the history of the new church. In an impressive service conducted by the Rev. Ray E. Kulman, the organ was hallowed to the memory of Mr. and Mrs. Albert S. Winn, Mr. and Mrs. William C. Foland, and Mr. and Mrs. John Shufelt, His father and mother, and both parents of his two wives . . .
This marriage proved difficult to sort out and was, for some time, in doubt due to the age difference of the couple. Lafayette was the son of Albert S. Winn and Rebecca ________, born December, 1856, probably in Ghent. He first married, about 1875, the Virginia Foland, the daughter of William C. and Elizabeth Foland, born about 1854, probably in Ghent. Note that Virginia was approximately two years older than Lafayette. This marriage lasted approximately fifty years. The Winns, Folands and Shufelts were neighbors in Ghent. Virgina died between 1920 and 1926. Lafayette then, at the age of 70, married Mary Estella Shufelt, age 31. In 1930, Lafayette and Mary Estella remain on the family farm in Ghent, ages 78 and 35, respectively. It is quite amazing to view the 1900 census of Ghent and see the five year old Mary living just eight families away from Lafayette and his first wife Virginia who were then 43 and 45 and had already been married for 24 years.
